An Ontological Representation of Adverse Drug Events
نویسندگان
چکیده
A standardized, controlled vocabulary allows adverse drug events (ADE) information to be described in an unambiguous way in knowledge bases, which is critical for clinical decision support systems for patient medication safety. In this paper, we describe our preliminary effort on development of an ontological representation pattern for the ADE domain. We discuss clinical implications of the effort and potential challenges on its integration with existing data standards.

Adverse reactions associated with intravenous immunoglobulin therapy in patients with dermatologic diseases: An 11-year retrospective study
Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used to treat many autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders. The main indications of IVIG in dermatology include treatment for resistant autoimmune bullous diseases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Although generally welltolerated, various adverse effects can occur. Methods: We designed a retrospective study ...
متن کاملThe Ontology of Vaccine Adverse Events (OVAE) and its usage in representing and analyzing vaccine adverse events
Licensed human vaccines can induce various adverse events in vaccinated patients. Many known vaccine adverse events (VAEs) have been recorded in the package inserts of commercial vaccine products. To better represent and analyse VAEs, we developed the Ontology of Vaccine Adverse Events (OVAE) as an extension of the Ontology of Adverse Events (OAE) and the Vaccine Ontology (VO). OVAE has been us...
متن کاملOAE: The Ontology of Adverse Events
BACKGROUND A medical intervention is a medical procedure or application intended to relieve or prevent illness or injury. Examples of medical interventions include vaccination and drug administration. After a medical intervention, adverse events (AEs) may occur which lie outside the intended consequences of the intervention. The representation and analysis of AEs are critical to the improvement...
متن کاملOntology-based time information representation of vaccine adverse events in VAERS for temporal analysis
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND The U.S. FDA/CDC Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) provides a valuable data source for post-vaccination adverse event analyses. The structured data in the system has been widely used, but the information in the write-up narratives is rarely included in these kinds of analyses. In fact, the unstructured nature of the narratives makes the data embedded in the...
متن کاملOntology representation and analysis of vaccine formulation and administration and their effects on vaccine immune responses
BACKGROUND A vaccine is a processed material that if administered, is able to stimulate an adaptive immune response to prevent or ameliorate a disease. A vaccination process may protect the host against subsequent exposure to an infectious agent and result in reduced disease or total prevention of the disease. Vaccine formulation and administration methods may affect vaccine safety and efficacy...
